Crossover from renormalized to conventional diffusion near the three-dimensional Anderson localization transition for light

چکیده
We report on anomalous light transport in the strong scattering regime. Using low-coherence interferometry, we measure reflection matrix of titanium dioxide powders, revealing crucial features optical which can not be observed with transmission measurements: (i) a subdiffusive regime at early times flight that is direct consequence predominant recurrent loops, and (ii) crossover to conventional, but extremely slow, diffusive long times. These observations support previous predictions near-field coupling between scatterers prohibits Anderson localization three-dimensional disordered media.

Three-dimensional Anderson localization of ultracold matter.
Anderson localization (AL) is a ubiquitous interference phenomenon in which waves fail to propagate in a disordered medium. We observe three-dimensional AL of noninteracting ultracold matter by allowing a spin-polarized atomic Fermi gas to expand into a disordered potential. A two-component density distribution emerges consisting of an expanding mobile component and a nondiffusing localized com...

The transition from diffusive transport to localization of waves should occur for any type of classical or quantum wave in any media as long as the wavelength becomes comparable to the transport mean free path l*. The signatures of localization and those of absorption, or bound states, can, however, be similar, such that an unequivocal proof of the existence of wave localization in disordered b...

متن کاملLight Avoids Anderson Localization
The confinement of waves in a disordered medium—Anderson localization [1]—has been observed for electromagnetic [2, 3] and acoustic [4] waves in disordered dielectric structures, and for electron waves in condensed matter. Anderson localization arises as a result of the constructive interference between waves that follow time reversed paths as they loop back to a point as a result of scattering...
